Abstract

This study examines the factors affecting the performance of supermarkets in a small developing country. The retail industry in Trinidad and Tobago is quite substantial and impactful; however, there is a shortage of research in this area that makes this research necessary.

Using a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, correlational, and predictive design, data were collected from a sample of 142 supermarkets in Trinidad. Instruments were created for the variables measuring marketing performance, management/leadership, and economic factors, and an instrument for measuring supermarket performance was adapted. A multiple linear regression model was analyzed in which supermarket performance was the dependent variable and the others mentioned were the independent variables.

The multiple linear regression model showed the general management/leadership (? = .316), and economic factors (? = .276) variables are significant predictors of supermarket performance. The model explained 39.4% of the variance of the dependent supermarket performance. It is concluded that supermarket management drives efficiency by managing economic factors to establish the most optimal performance.

The final model provided valuable information on the supermarket sector, but the sample used was mainly composed of small and medium-sized supermarkets. Consequently, the model may be limited in its application.
